Working within a Courts and Tribunals Service Centre (CTSC) or Regional Hearing Centre (RHC), you will support the effective administration of Tribunals by undertaking a range of complex case work and assessment activities to determine how best to advance caseloads and remove barriers to timely case progression. You will work both independently and as part of a team, under supervision of a Senior Legal Officer and the judiciary. You will make case management decisions under delegated judicial powers and liaise with key stakeholders and HMCTS colleagues to ensure effective administration of justice.Responsibilities and key duties
Undertake initial assessments on incoming tribunals work (including case files, applications and correspondence) to establish necessary authority and route for case progression.Manage caseloads under delegated judicial functions, identifying barriers or risks and developing interventions to resolve them.Provide cross-jurisdictional expertise as required and liaise with judiciary, legal professionals and tribunal administration teams.Draft and issue directions, provide listing instructions, and ensure appropriate panel composition and interpreter requirements.Undertake a range of high-quality casework, including complex cases, and provide flexible technical case support.Identify and sift applications, make decisions on postponements, transfers, withdrawals, extensions, varying directions, and expediting hearings.Communicate with parties to an appeal to ensure effective progression and allocate work to appropriate teams.Support administration to ensure documentation and records are maintained in accordance with policy and data protection.Development and progression
HMCTS offers learning and development opportunities, including the internal HMCTS legal apprenticeship scheme which can lead to becoming a qualified solicitor and progression to roles such as legal adviser in the magistrates court or tribunal management. The apprenticeship lasts 3–6 years depending on prior qualifications and entry point.Experience and qualifications
A law degree or equivalent technical experience is desirable.Equivalent technical experience: demonstrated transferable decision-making ability within a framework, under supervision.Working arrangements and benefits
