Overview
We’re looking for an experienced Senior Solicitor to join the Contracts and Procurement Legal Team in the local authority sector on a contract basis for 4 to 5 months. This is a hands-on role where you’ll provide expert legal advice and work closely with colleagues, managers, and partner agencies to support key organisational priorities. You’ll help ensure legal services run smoothly and to a high standard.
Responsibilities
 - Act as a senior member of the Contracts and Procurement Legal Team.
 - Support the Head of Law (Place) on contracts and procurement—drafting agreements, advising on procurement, and related matters.
 - Provide clear legal advice on contracts and procurement within the local authority.
 - Draft, review, and negotiate complex contractual documents.
 - Advise on procurement processes, ensuring compliance with relevant regulations and best practices.
 - Deliver first-rate legal support, focused on client service and continuous improvement.
 - Instruct and liaise with external solicitors or counsel when necessary.
 - Research and draft reports, making sure all issues are addressed.
 - Train staff on the Procurement Act 2023 and related regulations.
 - Mentor and guide the Brunel Student when required.
 - Advise on governance issues, including complex and high-profile cases.
 - Work directly with senior managers, providing practical legal support.
 - Produce reports and data for team and organisational needs.
 - Offer legal advice on major projects and other key initiatives.
 - Advise elected members and the senior leadership team as appropriate.
 - Tackle ad hoc tasks as they arise.
 - Help further the Council’s climate and ecological priorities.
Your skills
 - Qualified Solicitor or Barrister (England and Wales)
 - Strong background in contracts and procurement law
 - Experience working for a local authority or within the public sector
 - Confident working with senior stakeholders and cross-functional teams
 - Strong analytical and communication skills
 - Politically astute, proactive, and solutions-focused
