Service Designer (SC Cleared)

Overview
We are seeking a highly experienced Service Designer with a strong track record of delivering end-to-end, user-centred services in the public sector. This role requires a deep understanding of Government Digital Service (GDS) standards and principles, and the ability to lead complex design initiatives that align with policy intent, user needs, and organisational objectives.Rate - £600.00 per day inside ir35Location - Remote working with occasional travel on client siteDuration - 6 MonthsClearance - SC ClearedResponsibilities
Lead the design of end-to-end services that effectively deliver on user needs and policy objectivesEnsure accessibility, usability, and inclusivity across all touchpoints and service journeysMap and analyse complex service ecosystems to identify pain points, opportunities, and interdependenciesWork collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams, including policy, operations, delivery, product, system design, and other user-centred design disciplinesEngage in open and transparent design practices, sharing insights and collaborating with internal teams and wider stakeholders (subject to information security protocols)Produce detailed mappings of current (''as-is'') services and processes-both digital and offline-based on verified dataDevelop clear and effective service blueprints, journey maps, and visual artefacts to communicate design thinkingFacilitate co-creation workshops, design sprints, and stakeholder engagement sessionsAlign service design outputs with technical feasibility, organisational goals, and delivery constraintsAdvocate for inclusive, evidence-based, and user-centred design practices across teams and departmentsContribute to the development of service strategies and long-term transformation roadmapsIdentify and document service pain points beyond the current scope of work for future improvementMentor and support junior service designers and actively participate in the wider design communityDesign with an eye toward scalability, sustainability, and ongoing service iterationEssential Experiences
Extensive experience in Service Design within the UK public sectorDeep familiarity with GDS standards, service assessments, and digital transformation within government contextsProven ability to work in agile, multidisciplinary teams in complex environmentsExpertise in creating and presenting service design artefacts to diverse audiencesStrong facilitation skills with both internal teams and external stakeholdersA commitment to inclusive, user-centred, and accessible designExperience mentoring and leading design professionalsReasonable Adjustments
