Overview

The Post holder will join a team of surgeons who provide the service in both the pediatric burns centre at Birmingham Children Hospital and adult burn centres at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. Joint working includes clinical care, rotas, education, research, audit and governance activities. In addition to burns, the post holder will have the opportunity to do additional plastic surgery subspecialities depending on experience and the need of the adult or pediatric plastic surgery services.The post holder will be based at Birmingham Children''s Hospital. It is a full-time 10PAs job; however, less than full time is acceptable. The successful applicants would also be expected to participate in a 1:7 on-call rota.The appointee will join the burn surgery team and will have the opportunity to develop an interest in an area of general plastic surgery and/or laser therapy, along with their commitment to the burns service. It would be expected that the major responsibilities of the post are to the burns service (paediatric and adult).

ResponsibilitiesJoin a team of surgeons providing paediatric burns care at BCH and adult burns care at QEHB, with joint working across clinical care, rotas, education, research, audit and governance.

Contribute to on-call duties (1:7) covering both paediatric and adult burns services.

Develop an interest in general plastic surgery and/or laser therapy in addition to burns commitments.

Engage in regular teaching and audit for Specialist Trainees on the West Midlands Rotation; participate in training of SpR and junior trainees.

Participate in research, present and publish clinical findings and research results.

Qualifications and ExperienceEssential: Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) with license to practice.

Essential: FRCS(Plast) or equivalent; on the GMC Specialist Registration in Plastic Surgery, or CCT in plastic surgery within 6 months at time of interview.

Desirable: Postgraduate degree or research degree in burns-related topics (e.g., PhD or MD).

Desirable: Medical Laser Certificate or related experience.

Experience essentials: Wide experience in total burn care at a senior NHS level including surgical and non-surgical management of complex and major burns; both acute care and long-term reconstruction for children and adults.

Specialist burns fellowship (minimum 6 months) covering both adult and paediatric burns post-CCT/CESR or senior level post FRCS Plastic.

Experience in general plastic surgery and/or laser therapy.

Personal skills/qualities: Conscientious, hardworking; positive contribution to MDTs; flexible working pattern; ability to work in a warm burns theatre and under pressure; excellent teamwork across all staff levels.

Interests and motivation: Demonstrable clinical interest in burns management, commitment to continuous professional development.

Desirable: Service development; Membership of BBA; instructor or trainee instructor status on EMSB.

Research, audit, teaching and training: Commitment to research, recruitment for clinical trials, audits, and training of postgraduate and undergraduate staff; oral presentations at national/international meetings; research related to burns and burn management; completed audit cycles.

Travel between sites: Ability to undertake on-call for burns at both the adult centre (QEHB) and paediatric centre (BCH) and travel between sites; residential address within 10 miles or 30 minutes’ drive from BCH.
