Freelance Quantity Surveyor (QS)

Location: Central York – 3 days per week on site
Duration: 6 months, with potential to extend
Employer: Tier 1 Civil Engineering Contractor
Day Rate: Inside IR35 | £400 – £500 per day

The Project
This role is based on a major railway station upgrade in York – a technically complex, high-profile scheme with further phases in the pipeline. Following a restructure, the commercial team is seeking an experienced Quantity Surveyor to take ownership of core packages.

The Role
You’ll be responsible for the commercial delivery of assigned works, ensuring effective cost management and contract administration.

Day-to-day responsibilities include:

• Managing subcontractor accounts from procurement to final account

• Handling change management both upstream (client) and downstream (supply chain)

• Contract administration under NEC / Network Rail terms

• Preparing and presenting CVRs and cost reports

• Supporting the wider commercial team and mentoring junior staff where required

What You’ll Need

• Proven experience as a QS on civils and/or rail projects

• Strong working knowledge of NEC contracts

• Confident in subcontract management, change management, and reporting

• Able to work proactively as part of a Tier 1 commercial team
