Specialty Doctor in Oral Maxillofacial Surgery role at Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. This yearly renewable contract supports the expanding OMFS service. The successful candidate will join as a Staff Associate Specialist, focusing mainly on elective care to support clinical teams and meet rising patient demand. The OMFS department treats a wide range of facial, head, and neck conditions including cervical masses, salivary gland diseases, skin cancers, TMJ disorders, facial pain, oral pathology, and dental-alveolar issues.Consultant-led and supported by junior staff, the department runs separate adult and pediatric outpatient clinics and manages a high surgical volume, with about 80% of patients requiring surgery. The role includes emergency case management and collaboration with regional centers such as Bart’s Health for complex head and neck cancers. Multidisciplinary clinics address neck lumps, skin cancer, cervical tuberculosis, and HIV screening. Telemedicine and virtual consultations are integral to patient management. Elective surgeries occur in updated Day Surgery Units and main theatres with flexible scheduling. Responsibilities
Provide direct clinical care for patients attending the Oral and Maxillofacial clinics.
Run own clinics and surgical theatre lists under local anaesthesia, intravenous sedation, and participate in general anaesthesia where required.
Provide inpatient care and manage patient treatment on the ward.
Cover clinics and theatre sessions during colleagues'' leave periods.
Ensure patient safety through appropriate communication, referrals, and clinical discussions.
Perform surgical procedures in theatre sessions and assist consultants in clinics and theatre activities as needed.
Take responsibility for clinical lists and outpatient clinics, sometimes without junior assistance.
Vet and triage clinical referrals to prioritise patient care appropriately.
Maintain accurate record keeping and manage databases, including information governance compliance.
Participate in multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings and coordinate patient management.
Qualifications and Requirements
Essential: Full registration with the General Dental Council (GDC).
Essential: BDS or equivalent dental degree.
Essential: MJDF or MFDS (or equivalent UK dental postgraduate qualification).
Desirable: Postgraduate qualification relevant to Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
Essential: Minimum of 2 years of clinical experience in dentistry or OMFS after GDC registration.
Desirable: Minimum of 6 months full-time hospital-based experience in OMFS (SHO level or above).
Essential: Understanding of clinical governance and participation in clinical audits.
Essential: Basic understanding of research methods and engagement with academic activity (audits, case reports, or conference presentations).
Essential: Excellent written and verbal English communication; ability to work effectively with colleagues and external partners.
