Overview

A Consultant Interventional Radiologist is required at The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust for a busy and expanding Department.The post will include sessions at the two main hospital sites within an overall flexible group job planning format, with an agreed overall sessional make up as described below. Any potential candidate who wishes to be considered for a part-time or flexible working arrangement is also welcome to apply.

ResponsibilitiesPerform vascular and non-vascular interventional procedures carried out within the main site for inpatients and outpatients.

Contribute to the general diagnostic workload of the department and participate in the general radiology on-call rota (there is currently no out of hours interventional rota).

Develop and maintain advanced clinical skills relating to interventional patients.

Work flexibly according to changes in work patterns and requirements; participate in the general on-call rota (1:24 cross county on call). Prospective cover of annual and study leave is in place.

Be involved in the organisation and administration of the Radiology Department and teaching of other clinical staff, including participation in regular clinico-radiological meetings with other Consultants; involved in training of junior Radiology staff.

Develop enhanced clinical skills, especially in the assessment and management of acutely ill patients.

Demonstrate excellent team-working skills with the abilities and professional attitude to work well in a multi-professional team.

Deliver clinical and quality targets agreed locally and nationally with clinical teams and commissioners.

Follow patients throughout their clinical pathways.

Job planning and duties

A formal job plan will be agreed between the successful candidate and their Clinical Director and consultant colleagues, on behalf of the Medical Director within 3 months of starting in post. A full-time job plan is based on a 10 PA working week. The plan will be reviewed annually and is a prospective agreement that sets out the consultant''s duties, responsibilities and objectives for the coming year. It covers all aspects of a consultant’s professional practice including clinical work, teaching, research, education and managerial responsibilities. It provides a clear schedule of commitments, both internal and external, and includes personal objectives linked to wider service improvements and trust strategic priorities.For a full-time contract, the job plan will be divided on average per week (pro-rata for a part-time post) as:

7.5 Programmed Activities (PAs) of Direct Clinical Care – includes clinical activity, clinically related activity and predictable and unpredictable emergency work.

2.5 Supporting Professional Activities (SPAs) – includes CPD, audit, teaching and research.

The allocation of PAs is reviewed and may be adjusted when a further diary exercise is undertaken or if the service demands a review of the team job plan.Any applicant who is unable, for personal reasons, to work full-time will be eligible to be considered for the post. If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with other consultant colleagues.

Location and Services

Our main service locations are the Princess Royal Hospital (PRH) in Telford and the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital (RSH) in Shrewsbury, located about 20 minutes apart. Together they provide 99% of SaTH activity, offering a wide range of acute hospital services including accident and emergency, outpatients, diagnostics, inpatient medical care and critical care.

Appointment details

A formal job plan will be agreed within 3 months of starting in post. For a full-time contract, the plan is 10 PAs per week (pro-rata for part-time) with a mix of Direct Clinical Care and SPAs as described above. The diary allocation is reviewed periodically to reflect service needs.
