Paediatric Band 6 Development PostAn exciting opportunity is available for a full time/part time Band 6 Paediatric HDU Nurse as a developmental post to join the HDU team on Tiger Safari Ward at Queen Elizabeth Hospital. The post starts as Band 5 with the aim to promote to Band 6 once core clinical competencies are achieved. The role may involve taking charge on the inpatient ward and providing care to oncology patients if required. Applications are invited from experienced Band 5 or existing Band 6 Paediatric Nurses with excellent clinical skills.About the service

Our HDU service consists of 4 commissioned Level 2 respiratory beds, plus Level 1 HDU beds on a general children’s inpatient ward. We provide high quality care for children and young people up to 16 years requiring high dependency care, including long-term ventilation and acute NIV. We are a busy, high-acuity unit with a complex patient population.Main duties of the job

Provide high quality care to children requiring Level 2 and Level 1 critical care interventions, including long-term ventilation, tracheostomies, acute NIV, HFNC, DKA, and opiate infusions.Directly oversee HDU trained HCAs providing 1:1 HDU care on the ward.Assist paediatric, anaesthetic and STRS teams in caring for and optimising children who need retrieval for uplift to PICU care.Act as a mentor, teaching and supervising junior staff including Band 5 nurses, student nurses and HDU trained health care support workers.Contribute to HDU service development including fortnightly MDT meetings and simulation facilitation.Cascade and contribute to MDT training in areas such as tracheostomy management and ventilation.Complete train the trainer courses and contribute to parent competencies in tracheostomy care and long-term ventilation (LTV).Attend STRS and STPN networking and training events.Responsibilities

Lead and support the nursing team, deputising in the absence of the Clinical Nurse Manager and/or Matron as required.Monitor standards of nursing care and take action to maintain and improve them.Communicate effectively with children, families, the multidisciplinary team, other departments within the trust and external agencies.Respond to concerns from children and families and take remedial action as needed.Qualifications and Training

Essential: RSCN or RN Child; PILS provider; functioning at minimum diploma level; Mentorship level 5/6 or evidence of SSSA training; High Dependency module or equivalent experience.Desirable: Degree level qualification.Experience

Essential: Good written and verbal communication skills; ability to document legibly and precisely; significant post-registration experience at band 5 or above; interest and experience in teaching; acute children’s ward experience; competent in IV drug administration.Desirable: Significant experience of working with children and family; experience in managing the ward on a regular basis.Knowledge

Family-centred focus; ability to interact well with multidisciplinary team and patients/relatives; evidence of recent continuing professional development; IV competence.Desirable: Computer literacy.Disclosure and Barring Service Check
