The Urology Team at The Royal Marsden Hospital have an international reputation for high quality patient care, education and research and its partnership with the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) has created the largest comprehensive cancer centre in Europe.
The gateway to treatment at RMH is through the innovative and award-winning nurse-led urology diagnostic service which is the first nurse-led urology diagnostic service in Europe. This has now been successfully running for 6 years. An opportunity has arisen for a Urology Diagnostic Nurse Specialist to join this established team.
The successful applicant will work with the Diagnostic Team to support patients through this expedited pathway. You should have experience in the field of cancer care and advanced practice skills including phlebotomy and / or prostate biopsy or cystoscopy assistance.
You should have excellent IT and interpersonal skills and a professional manner, be able to prioritise and organise your workload and work under pressure. You will be expected to work across both our sites (Chelsea and Cavendish Square).

Main duties of the jobThe Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust is a world-renowned cancer centre, offering comprehensive holistic care to patients affected by cancer. As an organisation we care for the greatest number of cancer patients in London. We are well resourced with a skilled multi-professional workforce and established academic links and status. We have a history of innovation in medical treatments and in the field of clinical role development and patient led initiatives. This enables our patients to be diagnosed early and get the treatment and care which is best for their cancer and for their life (MO 1 and 3).
Under the supervision of the Advanced Nurse Practitioner post holder will work both directly and indirectly with patients and their carers to assist in coordinating the care of patients through their streamlined prostate diagnostic pathway hospital journey, providing the patient with the relevant information, education, support and coordinate any test preparations.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Manage the administration and delivery of the QUIC pathway
Coordinate suspected cancer referrals through a single point of access
To be proficient in all IT systems relevant for the role
The post holder will coordinate care by providing a single point of access.
They will be responsible for the quality check of all suspected prostate cancer referrals ensuring that all relevant information is available before the clinical triage takes place. They will liaise with GP practices and any other services to ensure that all relevant information is collated and be required to work across a range of IT systems to coordinate the booking of patient appointments.
In addition, the post holder will support the cancer office in tracking patients downstream in the clinical pathway. This will incorporate liaising with the clinical team and the patient pathway coordinators so that patients are treated in a timely manner, in line with national cancer waiting standards.
The post holder will be expected to implement and manage the processes involved in the QUIC pathway, ensuring that each level of the process is operating efficiently and delivering the highest quality of care.
In addition to their clinical role, the purpose of the QUIC Coordinator is to support the implementation, management and monitoring of the QUIC service. The post holder will be responsible for the administration of the project and ensuring associated processes are working effectively and within the agreed milestones.
Person specificationEducation and qualifications
Essential criteria
GCSE English Language and Mathematics (Grades A-C) or equivalent
NVQ3 or care certificate
Desirable criteria
Evidence of continued role development
Willingness to undertake learning and development courses
NVQ4 plus additional training to diploma level equivalent, or equivalent through short courses
Relevant experience and knowledge
Essential criteria
Experience working as a Support Worker in Urology AfC Band 4
Experience in coordinating a patient workload
Experience of multiprofessional working
Experience in the use of data management
Evidence of good communications skills
Analytical and Reflective Skills
Understanding of person-centred care
Understanding of the health and social care environment
Experience of coach / teaching patients and carers
Demonstrates an awareness of the complex issues when organisations and understands key elements of change management
Intermediate knowledge of national policy and research relating to the cancer diagnostic agenda
Desirable criteria
Understanding of Cancer Support services across the UK.
Awareness of Improving Outcomes: A Strategy for Cancer and other national cancer policies
Knowledge of relevant cancer treatments, interventions and terminology

Occurring mainly in winter, it is an infectious respiratory disease capable of producing symptoms ranging from those similar to a common cold, through to very severe or even fatal disease.
The wellbeing of our staff and patients is of the upmost importance to us, and it is the expectation of The Royal Marsden that all patient-facing staff have an annual flu vaccination, provided free of charge by the Trust.
