Highly Specialised Echocardiographer - ICC and Sports CardiologyWe are offering a unique opportunity for a
highly specialised cardiac physiologist
to work at the forefront of
Inherited Cardiac Conditions (ICC)
and
Sports Cardiology , embedded within a world-renowned consultant-led team.
You will be a critical clinical specialist in a service led by cardiologists conducting some of the most advanced ICC screening and research in the UK and internationally. You will work directly alongside
Professor Sanjay Sharma ,
Professor Michael Papadakis ,
Professor Maite Tome , and a team of doctorate-level Clinical Fellows providing expert cardiac investigations to support diagnosis, familial screening, and athlete risk assessment.
Key Responsibilities
Advanced echocardiography
Exercise testing (ETT) and cardiopulmonary testing (CPET) with a research and clinical focus
Supporting the team''s academic output and clinical research trials
Independently perform and report high-quality transthoracic echocardiograms (TTEs)
Identify and interpret subtle structural and functional abnormalities including: HCM, DCM, ACM, Brugada, LQTS, aortopathies, and neuromuscular-associated cardiomyopathies
Confidently distinguish between athlete''s heart and pathological conditions using a multimodal approach
Deliver high-quality care under time pressure for patients travelling from across the UK and abroad
Inpatient / clinic duties at St George''s
Exercise Testing and CPET
Conduct, interpret, and report on: standard exercise treadmill and bike tests; CPET with gas analysis; exercise stress echocardiography with image acquisition under load
Research, innovation and development: take an active role in collaborative clinical and academic research
Conduct protocol-based advanced assessments including 3D echo, strain imaging, spirometry, and bespoke exercise protocols
Maintain accurate research data and contribute to audit and service evaluation
Help write SOPs and present findings in clinical and academic forums
Outreach and Mobile Clinics: participate in Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) screening days and external sports cardiology assessments
Be available to travel for mobile echo/ECG clinics with elite athletes
Salary and Benefits
Band 7; Permanent
Salary £56,276 to £63,176 per annum inclusive of inner London HCAS plus 15% Recruitment and Retention Premium (RRP)
Additional allowances: High Cost Area allowance (HCA) and opportunities to participate in weekend waiting list initiatives and private work at enhanced rates
Qualifications and ExperienceEssential
BSc in Clinical Physiology (Cardiology) or equivalent
BSE accreditation or equivalent
ILS
RCCP or HCPC registration
5 years'' echocardiography experience post-BSE accreditation
Experience and knowledge in a wide range of cardiac investigations
Experience in training and supervising junior staff
Experience in a centre with frequent ICC patients
Extensive experience performing exercise tolerance tests
Desirable
MSc in Clinical Physiology or Echocardiography
Experience or involvement in research
Training qualification
Extensive experience in a dedicated ICC or sports cardiology centre
Extensive experience in performing and analysing CPETs
