This role is ideal for a technically minded, solutions-focused engineer who thrives in a collaborative environment. Working closely with the Applications team, Sales, Business Development Managers, and other cross-functional teams, the successful candidate will play a key role in creating and developing technical solutions—ranging from NPI and standard products to resale offerings—in direct response to customer and sales enquiries. With a strong emphasis on aligning with strategic business needs, the role will leverage product strengths and the innovation pipeline to deliver bespoke and effective customer design solutions. This position also supports the wider engineering function and contributes to the ongoing development of cutting-edge interconnect technologies.Key Responsibilities
Technical Solution DevelopmentContribute to the Applications engineering workload as required, ensuring alignment with project and business objectives.Work closely with customers to understand technical requirements, capture detailed specifications, and develop concept designs that meet both functional and strategic needs.Create compliance matrices and define verification, validation, and qualification criteria to ensure solutions meet customer expectations and industry standards.Cross-Functional CollaborationCollaborate with Sales and Business Development Managers to identify opportunities where products, capabilities, and engineering expertise can drive system-level solutions.Prioritise the development of complete system solutions over standalone products to add greater value for customers and support business growth.Liaise with pre-production and operations teams to ensure that proposed solutions are practical, efficient, and cost-effective to manufacture.Design, Testing and Manufacturing ReadinessConduct thorough testing and validation of concept designs to ensure market readiness and manufacturability within company guidelines.Address factors such as production efficiency, supply chain constraints, obsolescence, and sole-source risks to ensure robust, long-term solutions.Prepare and transfer detailed technical documentation to internal teams including Engineering, Product Management, and Production.Project Execution and SupportSupport the Applications team in meeting project milestones, resolving issues in a timely manner, and communicating progress and risks to stakeholders.Undertake design and development activities including engineering drawings, production specifications, contract documentation, and scheduling to support successful project delivery.Documentation and Customer SupportProduce comprehensive application notes for all supported projects, clearly outlining how products are to be integrated into customer systems.Include relevant technical documentation such as datasheets, specifications, and supporting materials to ensure a smooth customer experience.Requirements
QualificationsDegree-level qualification in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.A Master’s degree in a relevant field (e.g. materials science, mechanics) is highly desirable.ExperienceMinimum of 5 years’ experience in an engineering, product design, or similar technical role.Experience in customer-facing roles or direct client interaction, with a consultative and solution-focused approach.Proficient in 3D CAD tools and product lifecycle management software; experience with CREO is advantageous.Skilled in the design and manufacture of small mechanical components, with a strong understanding of tolerancing and relevant manufacturing processes.Ability to translate technical input and customer requirements into early-stage concept designs.Prior experience in connector design is beneficial but not essential.Technical SkillsStrong mechanical engineering foundation, with some familiarity with electrical principles.Solid understanding of New Product Introduction (NPI) processes and lifecycle stages.Practical, hands-on approach to problem-solving in design, materials selection, and manufacturing techniques.Knowledge of connector technologies or relevant product categories is an advantage.Familiarity with specific product ranges or previous experience with high-reliability components is desirable.Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present technical information clearly and confidently.Strong team player with the ability to work independently and manage workload effectively.Competent in Microsoft Office and other common software tools used in engineering environments.Comfortable interacting with customers at all levels; confident, professional, and presentable in face-to-face meetings.Willingness and flexibility to travel within the UK and internationally as required by the role.Want to speak to us?
