Locum Consultant in Ophthalmology

Overview
The Eye Department in Leeds is looking for a VR locum consultant to work for 6 months. The post holder will be working with the three other VR Consultants within the department. The VR service in Leeds is provided at St James''s, Seacroft and Wharfedale hospitals where the clinic/virtual clinics are undertaken. Applications are welcomed for this post on a full-time basis. The appointee must be able to demonstrate a high level of motivation for the subject of VR and have some relevant prior clinical and surgical experience. The post is available from the beginning of October and will be for 6 months. Candidates must be fully registered with the General Medical Council and hold a license to practice at the time of appointment.
Main duties of the job
Out-patient clinics including eye casualty
Supervision of patients
Contribute to Specialist Multi-disciplinary team meetings
Referrals to other specialists, departments and hospitals are timely and appropriate
Link with Consultant colleagues in other relevant site specialist teams within the Trust
Contribute to research, teaching and new developments within the Ophthalmology department. The post holder will be encouraged to facilitate and contribute to the current clinical research programs ongoing in the department.
Assist in providing service alongside the consultant team, this will include clinics, surgery and Acute Referral Clinic
Deliver care to patients with Ophthalmic conditions
Out-patient clinics
Care of in-patients on a non resident on call rota (1 in 4)
Work with colleagues in Ophthalmology to deliver acute on call (currently 1 in 4). This includes both out-of-hours cover in addition to acute ward rounds during normal working hours
About usThe Ophthalmology Department lies within the Head and Neck Clinical Service Unit at Leeds Teaching Hospitals. It is the largest provider of specialist Ophthalmology services in the Yorkshire region and provides a specialist ophthalmology service for patients in Leeds, Yorkshire and from across the north of England. The Eye Department is based at St James University Hospital, Leeds with Ophthalmology Services also held at Seacroft Hospital and Wharfedale Hospital. There are 29 consultants in the wider Ophthalmology Department. The team also trains Ophthalmic specialist trainees from the region.

The appointee must hold accreditation in Ophthalmology in the Royal College of Ophthalmology or equivalent and have completed higher specialist training (or equivalent) if currently in a training programme within the UK.

MB BS (or equivalent)
Vitreo Retinal or equivalent qualification.
Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold a current licence to practice.
Eligibility to work in the UK.
Is up to date and fit to practise safely
All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues demonstrated by one of the following:
passing a Secure English Language Test (SELT) from an approved provider
having a GCSE, A level, Scottish National Qualification level 4 or 5, Scottish Higher or Advanced Higher in English, gained through study at a UK school that you began when you were under 18
having a degree-level academic qualification that was taught in English - if you studied abroad, youll need to apply through Ecctis (formerly UK NARIC) for confirmation that your qualification is equivalent to a UK bachelors degree, masters degree or PhD
You do not need to prove your knowledge of English if youve already passed an English Language assessment that is accepted by the relevant regulated professional body.
Desirable
Higher degree e.g. MD/PhD relevant to the subspecialty.
Experience
Essential
Should have completed a recognised training programme in Ophthalmology
Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in the management of Ophthalmic Conditions.
Specifically, must demonstrate higher training in Vitreo Retina.
Evidence of continuous career progression consistent with personal circumstances.
Specifically, must demonstrate higher training in Vitreo Retina and provide evidence of expertise in the independent treatment of complex vitreoretinal procedures.
Evidence of the ability to carry out medical research.
Experience in training undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors.
Experience of participation in regular clinical audit.
Understanding of current issues in the NHS.
Well organised and skilled in good time management.
Effective interpersonal skills.
Demonstrate ability to relate to and work within a team.
Applicants must be on the Specialist Register or within six months of being admitted to the Register for trainees if currently in a training programme within the UK or have references which have been authorised by the Deputy Medical Director and Clinical Director.
Desirable
Previous experience of supervising research by junior staff.
Previous attendance on Appraisal Techniques and Small Group Teaching Workshops.
Attendance at recognised management course.
