Our Critical Care service at Southend Hospital is looking for a Locum Consultant to join an inclusive, friendly team on a 12 month basis. We are an ambitious Division, and successful individuals would be joining at a time where they can help shape the future with opportunity to meaningfully contribute to development of the Service.You will be working with the other Critical Care Consultants to direct and deliver care to patients referred and admitted to the critical care unit, participating in the established on-call rota and service framework.Your role will be to deliver critical care that meets the standards set out in the Intensive Care Society’s Guidelines on the Provision of Intensive Care Services (GPICS, edition 2), with specific reference to section 3.1., ensuring that the decision to admit a patient to critical care is made only after discussion with a Critical Care Consultant and ensure that all unplanned admissions to Critical Care occur within 4 hours of the decision to admit.This post is a Locum role and will allow the successful applicant to be supported through CESR and post will be converted to substantive once you are on the specialist register.Are you looking for a challenging Locum Consultant role where you make the difference every day, then we want to hear from you.Please see the attached JD for further details of this exciting role.This advert closes on Tuesday 7 Oct 2025Responsibilities
Direct and deliver care to patients referred and admitted to the critical care unit, in collaboration with other Critical Care Consultants.Participate in the established on-call rota and service framework.Ensure admission decisions to Critical Care are discussed with a Critical Care Consultant and that unplanned admissions occur within 4 hours of the decision to admit.Ensure that all patients admitted to Critical Care have a Consultant directed care plan on admission and are reviewed in person by a Consultant as urgently as the situation dictates, and always within 12 hours of admission.Operate within the “closed unit model” and work collaboratively with specialty teams; final decisions on admission, discharge and immediate day-to-day management rest with the attending Critical Care Consultant.Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and provide expert opinion to specialty colleagues on treatment escalation planning when requested.Communicate effectively with patients and relatives, providing high-quality verbal and/or written information and manage discussions regarding treatment escalation planning, resuscitation and end-of-life planning with sensitivity.Directly responsible for supervision and training of junior doctors within Critical Care, with a high level of Consultant oversight.Support development of the service to deliver excellent local and specialist care and contribute to staff development and career opportunities across the Trust.Qualifications/Requirements
Locum Consultant role with CESR support potential; post to be converted to substantive on the specialist register.Experience in Critical Care and ability to work within a closed unit model and MDT framework.
