Applications are invited for a 12 months fixed term locum consultant post in the Paediatric Intensive Care unit at the Evelina London Children’s Hospital and at the Royal Brompton (RBH) PICU-one clinical team on two sites. Candidates are welcome to apply from both paediatric or anaesthetic based training background. Proposed start date is September 2025.Main duties of the job
The Evelina PICU comprises 19 to 33 beds over 2 floors depending on activity and patient case load. The post-holder will be one of a team of 16 paediatric intensivists providing care for the paediatric critical care unit and integrated retrieval service, STRS at the Evelina. There are 11 consultants in the RBH based paediatric critical care team. The successful applicant will provide a specialist service to children requiring intensive and high dependency care at one or both paediatric critical care sites in the Trust. They will also provide consultant-led triage and management of emergency inter-hospital referrals and transfers with South Thames Retrieval Service. For those applicants from an anaesthetic background, a fixed day in anaesthesia with anaesthetic on call can be negotiated. The post-holder will be part of the paediatric intensive care consultant on call rota, with 1:6 on call for the management of the intensive care and supervision of the South Thames Retrieval Service. Both services are managed from within the same consultant team. Additional on call commitment may be necessary and attract additional PAs.Working for our organisation
The Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at Guys and St Thomas’ Foundation Trust is the regional lead PICU, serving the health needs of children in the South East of England, including London. It forms an integral part of a large tertiary children’s hospital and regional children’s operational delivery network, including tertiary specialist services in neonatology, cardiology/cardiac surgery, neurology, nephrology, metabolic medicine, general paediatrics, paediatric surgery and clinical genetics, among others. Subsequent to merger with the Royal Brompton Hospital (RBH), consultants in the critical care unit will be expected to be able to work across site in either intensive care unit, although the case mix on the RBH site is largely cardiorespiratory.Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The successful applicant will be expected to provide significant cover for the South Thames Retrieval Service including educational support of the service and the region. The South Thames Retrieval Service is integrated and staffed from the PICU. Day to day management of the service is one of the main responsibilities of the on-call consultant team with support from other PICU colleagues. An active PICU and retrieval teaching programme to PICU retrieval nurses, nurse practitioners, doctors and the region’s nurses and doctors is ongoing and is supported and delivered by the consultant team. This includes education delivered for a national advanced paediatric critical care clinical practice programme.The post will be based in either paediatric intensive care unit.Person specification
