Overview

Senior Soil Science Consultant / Principal Soil Science Consultant role at WSP. This position involves leading soil-related projects within the Ground and Water team as part of WSP''s Earth and Environment business. The role may include office-based work with periods on-site for training junior staff, quality assurance on surveys, and travel to client sites. The location is flexible with a hybrid mix of working from home and in-office collaboration.Responsibilities

Lead and support fieldwork/site visits and produce written reports for Agricultural Land Classification (ALC), Soil Resource Assessment, and tailored assessments for inclusion in Environmental Statements.Manage data to support technical reporting, provide advice to colleagues, and liaise with clients, landowners, contractors, statutory authorities and third parties.Prepare a range of soil and agricultural assessments in support of DCOs, EIAs, and construction projects; manage and coordinate survey work.Support colleagues across the UK with project delivery, assist in the preparation of fee proposals, business development and work-winning duties.Lead and mentor junior staff, sharing knowledge and best practices across environmental disciplines.Qualifications and Experience (we would love to hear from you if you have)

Degree-level qualification in Soil Science, or similar (physical geology, environmental science) with 5–10 years of relevant practical experience.Experience in completing Agricultural Land Classification (ALC) surveys, Soil Resource Surveys, Soil Classification and site supervision during construction works to appropriate competency standards.Solid grounding in HandS procedures (including CDM) for site work; working knowledge of EIA methodology is desirable but not essential.Experience liaising with internal and external clients, contractors, planning authorities and stakeholders; excellent communication and report-writing skills.Registered with a relevant professional body (e.g., British Society of Soil Science) and ideally chartered; current working knowledge of UK environmental legislation and agricultural practice.Ability to work as part of a team, take ownership of project delivery, and use applied GIS; full driving license and ability to work outdoors.Team and Work Environment

The role is within WSP’s Ground and Water team; the work is largely office-based with periods on-site for training junior staff and QA on surveys. The location is flexible; there is a mix of working from home and in-office collaboration.
